Cigarette Consumption by Sex

In 2013, average daily cigarette consumption was 15.2 for male smokers and 12.5 for female smokers, a statistically significant difference(15). Between 2012 and 2013, consumption declined significantly among males(16), but not females(17).

During the time period from 1999 to 2013, sex differences appear to have remained relatively stable: males smoked, on average, about 3 cigarettes more per day than females, although this varied somewhat from year to year (Figure 1.8).
